Can you alter the course of history?
Isle of Lewis Celtic Chess Set (board & pieces)
Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis (largest island of the Outer Hebrides, Scotland), the Isle of Lewis Chess Set is one of the most remarkable artifacts from the medieval age. Their discovery was quite by accident when a sand bank receded and revealed them. Their precise history and provenance in unknown but the pieces exhibit a Scandinavian workmanship with interlocking animal and floral patterns and compact figures dating back to the mid to late 12th century. The originals are a beloved and unusual set carved from walrus ivory housed in both the British Museum and the National Museum in Edinburgh.
Skillfully hand decorated, these pieces represent the Christian side led by King Richard I of England, known as Richard the Lionheart, in combat with the Muslim armies led by Saladin. This chess set concentrates particularly on the Third great Crusade led by King Richard I of England, who in 1189 joined King Philip II of France in an effort to recapture the holy city of Jerusalem. King Richard, with 8000 troops, seized Cyprus and some cities on the Palestinian coast, but ultimately failed to dislodge the Muslim leader, Saladin, from Jerusalem.
Wizard of Oz Theme Chess Set by Studio Anne Carlton
All the famous characters and some not so well known are represented in this hand decorated set. In the white pieces the Cowardly Lion is the King and Dorothy the Queen. They are accompanied by the Scarecrow as the Bishop and the Tin Man as the Knight. On the black side the King is represented by Kalidah a monstrous beast with the body of a bear and the head of a tiger. The Kalidah attacked Dorothy and her friends in the Gugu Forest along the Yellow Brick Road. The Queen is the Wicked Witch of the West who tries to capture and destroy Dorothy. Other characters included are Hammer Heads Wolves and Fighting Trees all enemies of Dorothy and her traveling companions.
The Alice in Wonderland Handpainted Chess Set
Without a doubt, this is one of the most popular Studio Anne Carlton chess sets and has been for many years. The pieces are based on the characters in Lewis Carroll’s famous Alice stories. It continues to achieve record sales world-wide and is a MUST for every chess enthusiast and collector. Made entirely by skilled craftsmen, each piece is polished and finely decorated by artists.
The White King and The Red King are the king, with Alice, of course as the queen. Hatta, the messenger serves as the bishop and The White Knight stands for the knight. Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee make excellent rooks while The Rabbit, Haigha the messenger, is the pawn.
